Research Interests

Fred Werner's research interests are in the area of experimental orthopedic biomechanics of the upper and lower extremities. Most of his research has been aimed at understanding the normal function of soft tissue structures and joints, how an injury or disease alters that function, and how well it is restored by various surgical procedures. Experimentally, he has determined how forces and pressures are transmitted through the normal and surgically modified wrist, knee, and elbow joints and has measured the normal and abnormal kinematics of the carpal bones and the knee. He has developed dynamic wrist, knee, and hip simulators in part to evaluate prosthetic implants and their fixation. He has 11+ chapters, 51+ journal publications, and 100+ scientific presentations.
