Students working with Bioengineering and Neuroscience faculty have access to a variety of labs across campus and in the surrounding area:

Institute for Sensory Research
ISR Website
The Institute for Sensory Research is a premiere research facility located on the Skytop campus of Syracuse University. Research laboratories, shops, a reference library, classrooms, and office space are located in a single modern building. ISR is currently subdivided into 12 laboratories encompassing the psychophysics, physiology, and anatomy of the auditory, somatosensory, and visual systems, and orofacial biomechanics. New areas of study include cochlear implants and hearing aids. These research labs contribute to both basic and applied science with major areas of applications in medicine and related fields, and in technology.

Many of the Bioengineering and Neuroscience faculty maintain their research laboratories at ISR and office space both here and in Link Hall where the undergradute bioengineering program is based.

The neural engineering and neuroscience graduate programs, based at ISR, provide students with advanced study in contemporary neuroscience research. Integration of life and physical sciences, combining rigorous experimental methodology with mathematical analysis is stressed. The graduate students are fully involved in the research work of the laboratories, dealing with transmission of sensory stimuli, such as light, sound, or vibration, and their transduction into nerve impulses; with information processing in the peripheral nervous system and the brain; and with the relationships between sensory stimuli and the sensations and perceptions they produce.

The Biomaterials Group

The Biomaterials Group is focused on understanding the interaction of materials used to repair or replace parts of the human body with the biological environment. This environment has chemical, mechanical and biological factors that affect the biomaterial. Similarly, the biomaterial itself can affect the environment. Biomaterials are used to make medical devices so we are very interested in the development of new devices and testing the performance of these devices. The Institute for Human Performance is the newest addition to the campus of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse—one of only 125 academic medical centers in the United States. Academic medical centers, which are built around medical schools and teaching hospitals, like Upstate's University Hospital, lead the nation in conducting medical research, educating the highest levels of health professionals and providing the most complex care to patients.

At the Institute for Human Performance, the physical barriers between scientists, clinicians and patients are removed, creating a continuous, interactive flow from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside. In this unique facility, scientists conduct biomedical research, physicians provide leading-edge clinical care and patients have access to the most advanced technologies, facilities and treatment protocols.
