1) Colleagues in statistics,

ICOTS is the International Conference on Teaching
Statistics, held every four years at some site around the
world. Previous sites have been in England, Canada, New
Zealand, Morocco, Singapore, and South Africa. ICOTS 7 will
be in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, July 2-7, 2006. Please visit
http://www.maths.otago.ac.nz/icots7 The theme of the 2006
conference is Working Cooperatively in Statistics Education
in the workplace, schools, wherever statistics is useful.

2) Applied Mathematics E-Notes "is a fully-refereed electronic journal that
welcomes short original research articles that report interesting and
potentially important ideas" in virtually any area of mathematics. Published
annually and distributed freely online, it features works contributed by
professional and academic mathematicians from all over the world. Each
volume contains about 25 papers and is roughly 200 pages in length when
complete. Visitors to the journal's website can download every paper
published from the first volume in 2001 to the present -- papers for 2004
are already being accepted and made available online. Additionally, the
Posters section of the website contains preprints of books, reports, and
other documents.

3) Subject: Free Dictionary section on Mathematics

Free Dictionary section on Mathematics
http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Mathematics

It's hard to believe it's all free! This trove of information from
thefreedictionary.com offers all sorts of information on math. From algebra
and integers to derivatives and polynomials, it's all here. By scrolling
over or clicking on a link, the visitor is treated to a sometimes whopping
amount of information about the given topic. For those simply interested in
math, math lovers, or possibly a teacher who needs to venture into a rusty
subject area before next fall, this site is well worth a look. Note: while
it's free, there are some advertisements.

Journal entitled "Hands-on guide to questionnaire research."

5)	Directories

Web directories (also called portals) can be an excellent alternative
to search engines when you're looking for information on a specific
subject. That's because they are organized and maintained by real
humans. Each of these directories lets you drill down through a
subject hierarchy or search by keyword. I'll assume you already know
about Yahoo, so let's look at two other sites:

LookSmart claims to be the global leader in Web directories, with 31
directories spanning dozens of countries and languages. There's more
of an emphasis on reviewing sites, as opposed to just listing them.

6)	JSE Volume 12 Number 2 now available

I am pleased to announce the publication of the Volume 12, Number 2
issue of the Journal of Statistics Education (JSE).

JSE is an official electronic journal of the American Statistical
Association (ASA), and is available through the ASA Web site at:
http://www.amstat.org/publications/jse

Please note that access to JSE is free. We are soliciting
advertising that will appear on the index pages of the site. If you
are interested in placing a banner or button advertisement in JSE,
please contact us at: journals@amstat.org

Thank you for reading and for exploring JSE!

7)	the Iberoamerican Academy of Management continues organizing new and exciting events. This is the very exciting program we have organized for the Academy of Management meetings in New Orleans in August 2004. As has become a custom during the past five years, we have jointly organized with the Academy of Management an entire day of activities as part of its annual meeting. This year the Academy meeting will be held in New Orleans during August 6 to August 11. To participate in the IAM sessions you need to register for the Academy of Management Annual Meeting. For a complete guide on how to register, please check the following web site.

8)	There is now a search facility on the IASE site -- see top right hand corner of homepage
http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~iase

It reaches right down into the pdf files so will also turn up occurrences of phrases in the 750 odd proceedings papers and SERJ papers etc that we have on the site.

Hope you find it useful.

Best, Chris Wild

9)	UNESCO Institute for Statistics [pdf]
http://www.uis.unesco.org/ev_en.php?ID=2867_201&ID2=DO_TOPIC

Established in 1999, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) was
designed
to meet both the needs of UNESCO Member States and to provide the
international community with a wide range of statistical information
in
order to "analyze the efficiency and effectiveness of their programmes
and
to inform their policy decisions." The UIC is hosted by the University
of
Montreal, and performs work around four primary themes, including
education,
literacy, culture & communication, and science & technology. Overall,
the
site is a remarkable source of information, including databases,
working
papers, country profiles, statistical tables, and methodological
material
about the conduct of their research. Several of these works are
featured
prominently on their homepage including a working paper on financing
the
expansion of educational opportunity in Latin America and the Caribbean
and
an electronic questionnaire on science and technology.

10)	RESEARCH PROJECT: STATISTICS TEACHERS' IDEAS ABOUT TEACHING AND LEARNING STATISTICS AT UNIVERSITY

Dear Colleague
Are you teaching statistics as a service course in a discipline such as engineering, education, psychology, biology, or any other? Would you be interested in participating via e-mail in a research project on teaching statistics?

If so, we ask you to spend a few minutes reading the 2 page pdf file at

http://users.tpg.com.au/ultrasor/SueGordon_files/StatsResearch.pdf

which has full information about the project and how to participate.

For more information or if you have difficulty accessing the attachment please e-mail Sue on sueg@mail.usyd.edu.au

We look forward to hearing from you.

11) CERME 4 - Group 5
Stochastic Thinking (Research On Prob and Stat Thinking)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fourth Conference of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME 4) takes place at Sant Feliu de Gu¡xols, Spain, from 17 to 21 February 2005.

CERME is organised by the European Society for Research in Education, and is designed to foster a communicative spirit. It deliberately and distinctively moves away from research presentations by individuals towards collaborative group work. Group 5 is one such group and will have 12 hours over four days in which to meet and progress its work.

The organisers for Group 5 invite research-based papers on stochastic thinking, including probability, statistics and the interface between these domains to be submitted electronically by September 30th, 2004.

For further details, please see

Types of contribution include invited papers, contributed papers and posters. No person may author more than one Invited Paper at the conference, although the same person can be co-author of more than one paper, provided each paper is presented by a different person.

Voluntary refereeing procedures will be implemented for ICOTS7. Details of how to prepare manuscripts, the refereeing process and final submission arrangements will be announced later.

INVITED PAPERS
Invited Paper Sessions are organized within 9 different Conference Topics 1 to 9. The list of Topic and Sessions themes, with email contact for Session Organisers is available at the ICOTS-7 web site at http://www.maths.otago.ac.nz/icots7, under "Scientific Programme".
