Alan Levy holds a Ph.D. in applied mechanics from Columbia University and is currently Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Syracuse University. He has twice been a research fellow at the U.S. Army Materials Technology Laboratory in Watertown, MA.

Prof. Levy is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the Inelastic Behavior Technical Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Sigma Xi and Pi Tau Sigma. He is listed in numerous biographical publications including American Men and Women of Science and Who's Who.

Research Interests
Alan’s research interests lie within the fields of mechanics and applied mathematics and focus primarily on nonlinear problems of elasticity. He has authored numerous journal articles on micromechanics, inclusion problems, and the effective properties of composite materials. His current research is concerned with cavity nucleation and growth in nonlinear solid media and with bifurcation and stability issues associated with that. He is also working on rational models of effective composite response, fully accounting for exact micromechanical modeling of the matrix-reinforcement interfaces.

Alan has taught many of the department’s fundamental graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical science. He has developed a number of new courses including graduate courses in Continuum Mechanics, Plasticity, and Mathematical Methods as well as undergraduate courses in Engineering Analysis and honors sophomore level mechanics (Engineering Statics Honors).

Teaching Interests
Mechanics of Deformable Solids, Dynamics and Vibrations of Particles and Rigid Bodies
